asked the Secretary of State for the Environment when the new national motorway signalling system will be completed; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Speed

The system is already in use on 173 miles; a further 311 miles should be completed by the end of this year. Work is being pressed forward as quickly as possible on other sections but it is too soon to say when it will be completed.

Mr. Awdry

Will the Minister confirm that this system, when it is completed, will cover the entire motorway network?

Mr. Speed

Yes, I can give that confirmation.

Mr. Molloy

Has there been any development of the idea of increasing police patrols on motorways to try to avoid some of the ghastly pile-ups we have been experiencing in recent months?

Mr. Speed

Essentially this is a matter for the local police authorities.
