§ 6. Mr. Laneasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he is satisfied with the progress made so far this year by local authorities in controlling obscenity in advertising in public places; and whether he will make a statement.
§ Mr. MaudlingIf my hon. Friend has particularly in mind the advertisement of films, the answer is that cinema licensing authorities are undoubtedly aware of their responsibilities in this matter; that there have been noticeably fewer complaints from the public recently; and that I hope to see a further improvement in the situation.
§ Mr. LaneWhile my right hon. Friend's reply is encouraging, in view of the continuing public concern about the wider problem, would he look sympathetically at any proposals which may be made for amending the legal definition of "obscenity", if that would make the law more effective?
§ Mr. MaudlingI will certainly look with great care at any proposals. I cannot promise sympathy; I certainly promise attention.
