§ 38. Mr. Stallardasked the Secretary of State for the Environment what reduction in rented accommodation there was in the London Borough of Camden in the period 1964 to 1970, year by year.
§ Mr. ChannonI regret that this information is not available. Table 9, pages 48 and 49 in the 1966 Sample Census, Greater London volume, gives the number of dwellings by tenure for each London borough.
§ Mr. StallardI thank the Under-Secretary for that scant information. Is the hon. Gentleman aware that rented accommodation in inner London, and certainly in the London Borough of Camden, is seriously declining and that this is causing extreme hardship to many 1498 people, especially young married couples, who have to move further and further from London to find somewhere they can afford to live and then pay grossly exaggerated fares to get to work in the London area? Will the hon. Gentleman take account of all these factors and come up with a suggestion for improving the situation?
§ Mr. ChannonI agree that the reduction of privately rented accommodation is a serious matter, not only in Camden. I therefore hope to have the hon. Gentleman's support for the announcement that my right hon Friend has made about the implementation of the Report of the Francis Committee.
