HC Deb 10 March 1971 vol 813 cc399-400
26. Mr. Moyle

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether he has now decided to approve the request from the Greater London Council for approval of the extension of the Fleet Line into South-East London; and whether he will make a statement.

Mr. Michael Heseltine

My right hon. Friend is considering the application.

Mr. Moyle

Is the Minister aware that as British Rail concentrates on long-range commuting at the expense of short-range commuting, and that as the troubles of public transport and the roads increase, the line is becoming ever-more urgent for the solution of public transport problems in South-East London? Will he expedite consideration of the project as rapidly as possible?

Mr. Heseltine

We shall obviously complete consideration as rapidly as possible. With £65 million of public money at stake, we must consider the matter very carefully.

Mr. Lipton

Before we get on to the Fleet Line, will the hon. Gentleman make sure that the extension of the Victoria Line to Brixton is completed this year?

Mr. Biggs-Davison

And South Woodford.

Mr. Heseltine

I do not believe that the two matters are related.

Mr. Lipton

They are.
