HC Deb 01 March 1971 vol 812 c1202
10. Mr. Jeffrey Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Wales if he will hold an inquiry into the reasons for the closure of the maternity unit at Nantyglo and Blaina Hospital; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Gibson-Watt

No.

Mr. Jeffrey Thomas

Is the Minister aware of the grave anxiety which certain allegations by the Welsh Hospital Board have caused in the area? Will he give an assurance that, should the situation at St. James's prove to be one where they cannot cope with the need, the position will be re-examined?

Mr. Gibson-Watt

I am assured by the Welsh Hospital Board that the provison at St. James's will be adequate. The hon. Gentleman will realise that the reasons for the reorganisation of the hospital services in the area have been fully set out and that the decision was taken by the right hon. Member for Cardiff, West (Mr. George Thomas).
