§ 7. Mr. Eadieasked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many airports in the United Kingdom have rail links for the convenience of passengers; and where they are situated.
§ Mr. Eldon GriffithsGatwick and Southampton, Sir.
§ Mr. EadieThe hon. Gentleman must be aware that the Government are concerned to assist private aircraft companies. Could not consideration be given for a change to the comfort of the passengers, for instance, by providing as many rail links as possible and by increasing creature comforts? May I suggest that the hon. Gentleman starts by considering again Turnhouse Airport at Edinburgh?
§ Mr. GriffithsThe hon. Gentleman seems to be asking three completely different questions about three completely different subjects, none of which he understands. It is for British Rail to put forward a proposal; it has not yet done so. It is for British Rail to agree with the British Airports Authority. When it has done so, I am certain that my right hon. Friend will gladly look at any proposals which are made.
§ Sir Clive BossomCan my hon. Friend give any details of the new hovertrains to airports which have just been announced?
§ Mr. GriffithsThese details are matters for my right hon. Friend the Minister for Trade. My right hon. Friend is certainly conscious of the possibilities of hovertrains and when he has an announcement to make, I am sure that he will let my hon. Friend know.
