HC Deb 16 March 1970 vol 798 cc4-5
5. Mr. Gower

asked the Secretary of State for Wales if he will take steps to ensure that the implementation of plans for the creation of a new hospitals system for Cardiff and South-East Glamorgan does not involve the discontinuance of all the Barry hospitals.

Mrs. White

My right hon. Friend has not yet received the proposals of the Welsh Hospital Board and the Board of Governors of the United Cardiff Hospitals for the reorganisation of hospital services in the Greater Cardiff area, and it would be premature for him to express a judgement.

Mr. Gower

When the right hon. Gentleman does, will he take account of the huge public opposition to these closure proposals and of the profound concern of the Barry Council and other local authorities in the area? Will he not overlook, too, the view expressed by B.P. Chemicals and Midland Silicones and other industrialists that the maintenance of the Barry Accident Hospital and the Amy-Evans Outpatients' Hospital is almost indispensable for their operations?

Mrs. White

I am sure that my right hon. Friend will take all these matters into account.
