§ 9. Mr. William Hamiltonasked the Minister of Technology if he will take steps to reduce the payment of public money to private industry in the development areas.
§ Mr. RidleyAs was stated in the Gracious Speech, we attach the greatest importance to promoting an effective regional development policy.
§ Mr. HamiltonIs the hon. Gentleman now saying that the Government intend to cut public expenditure in the development areas? Would he give a categorical answer about underwriting U.C.S. on the Clyde?
§ Mr. RidleyWe intend to foster regional development by getting the greatest possible value for money.
§ Mr. EmeryIn order to achieve that policy, will my hon. Friend ensure that the infrastructure in development areas is that which has first priority in being able to ensure that industry is attracted to the areas which require it?
§ Mr. RidleyThere is certainly very strong evidence that, where some infrastructure has been provided, it has helped to develop the region. We will certainly continue to look at that.
§ Mr. BennWhen does the hon. Gentleman expect the review of regional policy to be completed, in view of the fact that his statement that it is to be completely reviewed will shake the confidence of industry in future development in development areas?
§ Mr. RidleyThe right hon. Gentleman knows that we have been in office for 10 days. I hope that he will give us a little longer.
