HC Deb 14 December 1970 vol 808 cc930-1
15. Mr. Barry Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what is his estimate of the number of over-size classes in Flintshire primary schools.

Mr. Peter Thomas

In September, 1970, there were 38 classes in primary schools in Flintshire with 40 or more pupils. The current number of such classes is not available.

Mr. Jones

Is the right hon. and learned Gentleman aware that in my constituency, due to a population explosion in townships such as Connah's Quay, Flint and Buckley, there is considerable overcrowding in classes for young children in schools on new housing estates? Would it not be a good idea to have a realistic quota in the county and enable more mobile classrooms to be used? Will he use the combined powers of his twin offices to expedite the matter immediately?

Mr. Peter Thomas

I agree that there was a problem in Flintshire. In January last the percentage of over-sized primary school classes in Flint was higher, at 9.2 per cent., than in any other county in Wales. I am happy to say that there has been an improvement. In september the figure was reduced to 5.5 per cent., and the local education authority has made provision for additional teachers. I think that the figure is probably lower now and will continue to be lower.
