HC Deb 12 March 1969 vol 779 cc1347-8
7 Mrs. Cullen

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will make a statement on the progress of the extension of smoke control orders in Central Scotland.

The Minister of State, Scottish Office (Dr. J. Dickson Mabon)

Local authorities in Central Scotland have so far made 138 Orders, covering 329,000 houses, of which 117, covering 289,000 houses, are already in operation. Most of the remainder will come into operation later this year.

Mrs. Cullen

I thank the Minister for his reply. Will he give comparable figures for October, 1964?

Dr. Mabon

Up to 30th September, 1964, 60 orders were made covering 172,000 houses, of which 43, covering 102,000 houses, were by then in operation. In other words, it was one-ninth of the houses in Scotland as of 30th September, 1964, and it is now one-third.
