HC Deb 10 March 1969 vol 779 cc971-2
38. Mr. Newens

asked the Minister of Transport whether the dates proposed for the commencement and completion of the M11 motorway will be varied in the light of decisions taken on the siting of the third London airport.

Mr. Bob Brown

It is proposed to build this inter-regional motorway in the early 1970s whatever decision is taken about the siting of the third London airport, although if the Nuthampstead site was selected we should have to consider the provision of a link with this motorway.

Mr. Newens

While thanking my hon. Friend for that reply, may I ask whether he will see that full account is taken of the fact that, irrespective of all the traffic which might have been generated by the siting of the third London airport at Stansted, present developments cause an inordinate amount of delay on the present link roads and that at various times of day, particularly the rush hour, Epping High Street is more congested than Parliament Square, and that, therefore, there is very great need to bring forward the building of this motorway, and that in no circumstances should it be delayed?

Mr. Brown

I think I have clearly indicated that there will not be any delay on this account.
