§ 3. Mr. Dudley Smithasked the Minister of Public Building and Works what plans he has for cleaning the facade of the Palace of Westminster.
§ Mr. LoughlinNone at present, Sir.
§ Mr. SmithAs this is one of the most visited and observed buildings in the country, does not the hon. Gentleman think that great benefit would result, bearing in mind the success with the cleaning of other public buildings in London?
§ Mr. LoughlinOf course some benefit may be derived from cleaning the building, but there is the question of cost, and in this case it would be about £200,000. The time scale would also be long. The Government are not prepared to spend £200,000 on such a project at the moment.
§ Sir Knox CunninghamHas the hon. Gentleman any plans for cleaning out the inside of the Palace of Westminster, which would save a lot of cost, by having a General Election?
§ Mr. WhitakerCould not the cost be recouped for the purpose by a son et lumiére performance?
§ Mr. LoughlinI will consider it.
