HC Deb 03 July 1969 vol 786 c617
6. Mr. Booth

asked the Postmaster-General when the transmission of Radio One will be extended to cover the Furness area.

The Assistant Postmaster-General (Mr. Joseph Slater)

The extension of its services is primarily a matter for the B.B.C. but I understand that it has no immediate plans for extending the coverage of Radio One in the Furness area.

Mr. Booth

Will my hon. Friend tell the B.B.C. to take the necessary steps to improve the reception of Radio One in the Furness area?

Mr. Slater

The B.B.C. informs me that improvements are under consideration and that it has the needs of the area in mind.

Mr. Fletcher-Cooke

Instead of extending Radio One, will the hon. Gentleman consider abolishing it, since it is no part of the public service to provide pop music, a function better undertaken by commercial concerns?

Mr. Slater

The hon. and learned Gentleman is anticipating a later Question.
