HC Deb 21 November 1968 vol 773 c1513
8. Mr. Dalyell

asked the Postmaster-General if he will provide a post office or sub-post office at East Whitburn, West Lothian.

The Assistant Postmaster-General (Mr. Joseph Slater)

We would not be justified in providing a sub-post office in East Whitburn, less than a mile from the office in the neighbouring town of Whitburn.

Mr. Dalyell

Does my hon. Friend recognise that there is a genuine sense of grievance in East Whitburn, especially among old people and pensioners? In the circumstances, will he not reconsider the decision?

Mr. Slater

I appreciate this point. The request for a sub-post office in this area goes back 20 years—to 1948. I have gone into the position again, but I can find no change in the circumstances as set out by my right hon. Friend the present Secretary of State for Education and Science in his letter to my hon. Friend on 10th January, 1967.
