HC Deb 21 March 1968 vol 761 c575
14. Mr. Channon

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science, what consultations he has had with the Arts Council about the rehousing of the Sadler's Wells Opera Company.

Miss Jennie Lee

I have been keeping in close touch with the negotiations for a possible move to the Coliseum which have been going on between the Arts Council, the Greater London Council, Sadler's Wells and the owners of the Coliseum. Discussions are now in progress between the owners and the present tenants; I very much hope that the outcome will be satisfactory.

Mr. Channon

Is the hon. Lady aware that everyone hopes that the outcome will be satisfacory? Will she be good enough to keep us informed about progress?

Miss Lee

Yes, Sir.

Mr. Henig

Will my hon. Friend bear in mind the fact that the major concern of some people is the amount of touring that the Sadler's Wells Company is able to do? Will she bear this in mind in future negotiations?

Miss Lee

Certainly. The Scottish director of Sadler's Wells paid a special visit to London because he is so eager that we should get this larger theatre which would have particular importance particularly from the point of view of touring.
