HC Deb 20 March 1968 vol 761 cc395-6
14. Mr. Maddan

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what are the respective percentages of total serving person nel having a General Service Medal in the Royal Navy excluding the Royal Marines, the Royal Marines, the Army and the Royal Air Force, respectively.

Mr. Reynolds

I regret that this information is not available.

Mr. Maddan

Is that not rather a strange Answer? May I ask the Minister if he will take steps to see that it is available?

Mr. Reynolds

No, I will not take steps to see that it is available. It costs a terrific amount of money and man-hours. These medals and clasps to them are being awarded all the time. Sometimes they are not awarded until a person has left the Service, and there is no record of how many people who have had them are still serving.
