§ 33. Sir J. Edenasked the Postmaster-General whether he is aware that as from 16th September, 1968, the charge for posting the Bournemouth Guide will be increased by approximately 45 per cent.; and whether in view of the effect the increased postal charges will have on holiday resorts he will reconsider these charges.
§ Mr. StonehouseI am aware of this, but I should not be justified in altering the charges announced. The higher than average increase for the heavier printed papers such as the Bournemouth Guide reflects the extent to which they are at present subsidised by other users of the post.
§ Sir. J. EdenIs the right hon. Gentleman aware that this will cost Bournemouth Corporation an extra £2,300 a year? As this service has not improved, what possible justification can there be 1655 for placing this further burden on the tourist industry?
§ Mr. StonehouseThis printed paper service has been costing other users of the Post Office £7½ million a year and we are determined that there shall be a fair apportionment of charges. The users of this service must be expected to pay the economic price for it. Bournemouth and the other towns concerned cannot expect those who are subsidising them to continue to do so.
