HC Deb 04 May 1967 vol 746 c713
14. Mr. Allason

asked the Minister of Overseas Development what steps he is taking to relieve the hardship suffered by United Kingdom citizens in receipt of pensions from the Pakistan Government where these pensions have been substantially reduced as a result of the devaluation of the Indian Rupee.

Mr. Oram

We are making urgent representations to the Pakistan Government for the reinstatement of these pensions at their former value.

Mr. Allason

Is not the difficulty arising from the payment by India at their devalued rupee to Pakistan, whereas they pay at the old value if it is a pension coming directly to this country? Therefore, it is a problem rather between India and Pakistan than directly the responsibility of Pakistan. Has not India honourably met the difficulties of revaluation in almost every other case? Would not the Government make urgent representations to India about this and consider making——

Mr. Speaker

Order. Questions should be reasonably brief.

Mr. Oram

The hon. Member has described the origin of this difficulty, but no difficulties have persisted in the case of pensions for which the Indian Government are responsible. We believe there is a misunderstanding in respect of the Pakistan difficulty and it is on this that we are making urgent representations and are hopeful for a solution.
