HC Deb 13 June 1967 vol 748 c299
Q1. Mr. Winnick

asked the Prime Minister if he will give an assurance that the House will be informed of a Government decision to authorise the manufacture of a new generation of nuclear weapons.

The Prime Minister (Mr. Harold Wilson)

If my hon. Friend is referring to a proposal to replace the Polaris missiles by Poseidon missiles, the answer is that Her Majesty's Government have no such intention.

Mr. Winnick

Is my right hon. Friend aware that his Answer will be received with a great deal of satisfaction, certainly on this side of the House?

Mr. Philip Noel-Baker

Can the Prime Minister say how much of the £260 million a year we are now spending on military research is given to devising new generations of nuclear weapons?

The Prime Minister

I have made it clear that we are not concerned at all with new generations of military weapons. It is not the practice to give the figures my right hon. Friend asked for, but I made clear in my Answer what the position is about future generations.

Mr. Lubbock

What nuclear weapons of the present generation are still being manufactured by Her Majesty's Government?

The Prime Minister

It is not usual to give answers on these questions. I was asked in this case about new generations.
