HC Deb 28 February 1967 vol 742 cc254-5
27. Mr. David Price

asked the Minister of Technology what support his Department is giving to the development of the linear motor.

Dr. Bray

Together with the National Research Development Corporation and other bodies, the Department is examining possible developments incorporating linear motors. Also, we are keeping in touch with the progress made by universities with the support of the Science Research Council. We would be glad to consider proposals leading to further applications of their results.

Mr. Price

Is a full-scale working prototype suitable for propelling a train being developed, and, if so, will his Department give a suitable development contract to a university or a firm?

Dr. Bray

No decision has been taken on a full-scale working prototype. However, there are many applications in other fields which are of great importance, ranging from the movement of cranes to textile machinery. These are under active consideration.
