§ 7. Sir G. Nabarroasked the Minister of Transport when she will introduce legislation with regard to faulty tyres.
§ Mr. SwinglerRegulations were laid before the House on the 5th of this month to strengthen the Motor Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations with regard to the maintenance of tyres.
§ Mr. NabarroWhen does the hon. Gentleman expect these Regulations to become operative and effective? Is he aware that more accidents and fatalities on the roads today may be attributed to faulty tyres than to drunken driving?
§ Mr. SwinglerWe are well aware of the importance of raising the standard of tyre fitness. These Regulations will come into operation on 1st April next year. We are deliberately giving a period of advance notice to enable all concerned, who are now aware of the standards that we are laying down, to make themselves fit by that date.
