§ 19. Mr. Brewisasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the establishment strength of Inland Revenue district valuers; and how far the number employed is below strength at present.
§ Mr. BrewisHow many extra district valuers does the hon. and learned Gentleman think will become necessary as a result of Measures of the last two years like the Land Commission Act and Capital Gains Tax?
§ Mr. MacDermotIt is impossible to estimate the number until we know the weight of work which will arise from the Land Commission, but obviously an increase will be required and vigorous steps are being taken to recruit and train more valuers.
§ Mrs. ThatcherDo the "vigorous steps" include the offering of higher salaries?
§ Mr. MacDermotNo, but they do include direct recruit to the main grade of more experienced qualified people.
