HC Deb 31 October 1966 vol 735 cc30-1
51. Mr. J. H. Osborn

asked the Minister of Labour to what extent his Department conforms to Article 20(2) of the Declaration of Human Rights.

Mr. Gunter

I accept the principle laid down in this Article.

Mr. Osborn

Would the right hon. Gentleman confirm that Britain is still a signatory? Is he aware that many countries which are signatories have banned the closed shop? May I draw his attention to, and urge him to make inquiries about, the circumstances relating to a closed shop in Sheffield, as a result of which one individual is suffering hardship and his wife a mental breakdown?

Mr. Gunter

I am fully aware of the incident in Sheffield. I have said that we accept the principle laid down in this Article. The hon. Gentleman will know that there are many conflicting arguments about the closed shop and that they are not all on one side. That is why, to be repetitious, in the evidence which we and others gave to the Royal Commission we said that we should like guidance on what to do about this issue.
