§ 40. Mr. Currieasked the President of the Board of Trade what steps have been taken with a view to limiting the import of cutlery into the United Kingdom from Hong Kong; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. DarlingNone, Sir; I am acutely aware that the cutlery industry in the United Kingdom is concerned about this matter. A good proportion of the manufacturers are located in my constituency and I am shortly to meet representatives of the industry to hear their views.
§ Mr. CurrieKnowing his constituency interest in this matter—and I also have such an interest—will the right hon. Gentleman try to assist in arriving with the industry—manufacturers and importers in Hong Kong—at agreement aimed at some limitation? Is he aware that the agreement reached with Japan has worked very well for the industry? Will he try to get a similar agreement here?
§ Mr. DarlingYes, this will be one of the matters we shall be discussing, but it should be borne in mind that imports of cutlery from all sources are increasing. Therefore, the talks I hope will go wider than merely talking about Hong Kong.
§ Mr. BiffenDoes the hon. Gentleman expect these imports to rise on account of the removal of the import surcharge?
§ Mr. DarlingI do not think so.
