HC Deb 29 June 1966 vol 730 cc1773-4
6. Mr. Raphael Tuck

asked the Minister of Transport how many road accidents there have been in the past six months, in 1965, and in 1964 caused by overtaking in the middle lane on that part of the A41 from Stanmore to Watford which has three lanes; how many of these were fatal; and how many resulted in personal injury.

Mr. Swingler

I can give figures relating to all vehicle collisions between the junctions at Brockley Hill and Huntonbridge:

In 1964 there were 5 accidents which caused 8 personal injuries.

In 1965 there were 3 accidents which caused 1 fatality and 5 personal injuries.

In January to May, 1966, there was 1 accident which caused 1 fatality and 1 personal injury.

Mr. Tuck

Does not my hon. Friend feel that these figures show a clear case for the imposition of double white lines on alternate sections of the route, so as to obviate these fatal and dangerous accidents?

Mr. Swingler

As my hon. Friend knows, the markings on this road have been altered in the last couple of years, and I think that that has resulted in some improvement. In addition, the problem will be considerably relieved when the M1 extension has been completed. However, we will certainly consider his suggestion.
