HC Deb 29 June 1966 vol 730 c1773
2. Mr. Kitson

asked the Minister of Transport when it is planned to build a by-pass for the village of Bowes in the North Eliding of Yorkshire.

Mr. Swingler

This scheme will be considered for a future extension of the trunk road programme. But it has less priority than other improvements urgently needed elsewhere.

Mr. Kitson

Would the hon. Gentleman bear in mind that, as considerable improvements have been made to the A66 in recent years, the traffic speed problem through Bowes is frightful at the moment? As there is a certain amount of congestion in the village and there is to be a by-pass, could he give it priority?

Mr. Swingler

I recognise the problems which the hon. Gentleman mentions, but it will be some time yet before the major scheme can be undertaken. If the county council cares to put forward a partial lesser scheme affecting the classified road A67, we will be prepared to give that consideration.
