HC Deb 29 June 1966 vol 730 c1772
47. Mr. Atkins

asked the Minister of Transport why she has decided to introduce regulations making the use of yellow headlamps illegal.

Mr. Swingler

My right hon. Friend's Working Party on vehicle lighting has recommended, for uniformity, that headlights should be white. France alone requires yellow lights, and there is no significant evidence in their favour.

Mr. Atkins

Will not the Minister reconsider this matter? Does he not realise that many people think that yellow headlamps are just as good as, if not better than, white ones? Is it not strange that a country so close to ours not only approves of them but insists on them?

Mr. Swingler

France is alone in this. She is the only country which insists on yellow headlights. There has been research into this matter over many years, and no advantage has been shown for yellow headlamps. The hon. Gentleman may care to note that under the draft Regulation circulated it will continue to be open to anybody to have yellow lamps fitted in addition to white.
