asked the Minister of Transport if she will publish the results of the experimental double white line marking on three-lane carriageways which restrict traffic to a single lane alternately in each direction.

My right hon. Friend hopes to make a statement before the Summer Recess.

Could the hon. Gentleman hasten this, because it is so important? It has proved its worth on the Continent, and we have already had more than a year practising this. Could we put it into effect?

Mr. Swingler

We have had two years in some cases, but the hon. Member will appreciate that there is a considerable volume of evidence from the experiments that we have carried out on the A1, A4 and A6. These experiments have been by no means uniformly successful. They require very careful assessment, but my right hon. Friend hopes to make a statement within the next few weeks.
