HC Deb 27 July 1966 vol 732 cc1689-90
1. Mr. Hamling

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he will now take powers to compile a registry of land holdings in Scotland.

The Secretary of State for Scotland (Mr. William Ross)

No, Sir. The cost of compiling a register of individual land holdings would be very great, and I do not think it would be justified.

Mr. Hamling

Will not my right hon. Friend agree that such a proposal would be of advantage in preparing for the nationalisation of land in Scotland, which would be a great example to the English?

Mr. Ross

We have gone a long way in that respect, judging by the amount of land already held by the Secretary of State. But I assure my hon. Friend that, although I share his interest and curiosity, the expense would not be justified in this case.

Mr. Brewis

Will the right hon. Gentleman arrange for the change of use of Woolwich Arsenal to be recorded in a suitable register?

Mr. Ross

If the hon. Gentleman puts that Question down—it will not be to me—he may get an answer.
