5. Mir. Boyd-Carpenter

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government on what date the Kingston-upon-Thames Town Centre Redevelopment Plan was submitted to his predecessor; and when he expects to come to a decision on it.

Mr. Mellish

The scheme was submitted on 8th May, 1963. My right hon. Friend's proposed modifications were published on 15th July, 1966, and how soon he can come to a decision depends on whether he receives any objections to those modifications.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

Is the hon. Gentleman aware—I am sure that he is—that the considerable period of time which has elapsed is causing uncertainty and loss? Can he do what he can to expedite a decision?

Mr. Mellish

Yes, Sir. I promise to do that. I expressed some concern to the right hon. Gentleman's constituency last week. This is a massive development, including a bridge across the Thames. There were 228 objections to the scheme at the public inquiry. The time factor has bothered us, but we will do what we can to assist.
