HC Deb 19 July 1966 vol 732 cc358-9
32. Mr. Boardman

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government what estimate he has made of the inflationary effect on the price of building land in the conurbations of the tightly drawn green belt boundaries surrounding them.

Mr. Mellish

The price of building land is affected by many factors. The presence of a green belt may affect it by making houses adjoining the green belt more desirable or by reducing the amount of land available for building. It would however be impossible to isolate these factors, and no estimate of the effect on the price of building land of green belts has therefore been made.

Mr. Boardman

Since this tight girdle around some of the conurbations is creating an entirely false scarcity of building land and thereby grossly inflating the prices of such land, will not the Minister give the most urgent consideration to a revision of existing green belt boundaries?

Mr. Mellish

My right hon. Friend has asked the county authorities to review their existing green belts and is waiting for a report from most of them.
