HC Deb 27 January 1966 vol 723 cc373-4
10. Mr. Prior

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will list the prisons where prison officers are paid an inconvenience allowance.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

As there are approximately 40 prison service establishments at which an inconvenience of locality allowance is paid, I will, with permission, circulate the list in the OFFICIAL REPORT.

Mr. Prior

Would the right hon. Gentleman consider adding Blundeston Prison to the list in view of the very special circumstances of a lot of the prison officers there? Although it is not very far from Lowestoft, it is an isolated area and this was one of the causes of dissatisfaction with the conditions.

Mr. Jenkins

It is, I think, four miles from the centre of Lowestoft. A special bus service was put on some time ago, but was not very fully used. I have not a closed mind on this matter, but at present I do not think that it fulfils the criteria in deciding what establishments should be put on the list.

Following is the list:

Prison service establishments at which an inconvenience of locality allowance is paid:

Aldington. Grendon.
Ashwell. Guys Marsh.
Askham Grange. Hatfield.
Bela River. Hewell Grange.
Birmingham (Brockhill). Hill Hall.
Hollesley Bay.
Blantyre House. Huntercombe.
Camp Hill. Leyhill.
Campfield House. Lowdham Grange.
Dartmoor. Moor Court.
Drake Hall. Morton Hall.
Eastchurch. New Hall.
East Sutton Park. North Sea Camp.
Erlestoke House. Parkhurst.
Everthorpe. Pollington.
Exeter (Haldon Camp). Prescoed.
Send.
Foston Hall. Spring Hill.
Gaynes Hall. Sudbury.

In addition the allowance is payable to the staff resident at the farms attached to Birmingham and Shrewsbury prisons; and to those members of the staffs of Appleton Thorn and Hindley who are resident in quarters at High Legh.
