HC Deb 04 March 1965 vol 707 c1494
2. Mr. Tilney

asked the President of the Board of Trade how much vacant factory space there is to rent or sell in the Merseyside development area.

58. Mr. Dunn

asked the President of the Board of Trade how much vacant factory space is still available on Merseyside; and what steps he is taking to secure tenants for such space.

The President of the Board of Trade (Mr. Douglas Jay)

In mid-February my officials knew of about 1.4 million square feet of factory space, mostly in old properties, available in the Merseyside district. We maintain a register of such factories and take every opportunity to interest firms with suitable projects who are contemplating setting up on Merseyside. We are bringing these factories to the attention of firms from congested areas.

Mr. Tilney

Would the President agree that in comparison with the figures which he has just quoted new factories at the taxpayers' expense of 25,000 sq. ft. become minor and that what is really important is to get industry moving towards Merseyside?

Mr. Jay

Yes, but some firms prefer new factories to old ones. I am circulating this information to regional controllers in congested areas. I am grateful to the hon. Member for bringing the matter to our attention.

Mr. Dunn

Would my right hon. Friend agree that there are great possibilities and opportunities for publicising in trade journals the development area of Merseyside, quoting the spaces available?

Mr. Jay

Yes, Sir.
