§ 8. Sir J. Fletcher-Cookeasked the Minister of Overseas Development what application she has received for financial aid from the Government of Cyprus; whether, in granting aid, she will ensure that it is used for the benefit of all the peoples of Cyprus and not merely for the benefit of the majority community; and whether she will make a statement.
§ Mrs. CastleI have received no formal application for financial aid from the Government of Cyprus. We have however told the Cyprus Government that we are ready to begin, without commitment, the consultations about future aid which are required under the Exchange of Notes of August, 1960. We have at the same time made it clear to them that, in considering this question, we shall be much influenced by the prospects of securing a lasting political and constitutional settlement and conditions in the island in which the benefits of any aid would be available to all the people of Cyprus.
