§ 6. Mr. Loveysasked the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs what further progress has been made in the attempt to arrange the return of Brian Cowell to this country from West Germany.
§ Mr. PadleyThe German authorities have informed Her Majesty's Consul-General at Stuttgart that they have decided to take steps to suspend the sentence of imprisonment passed on Mr. Cowell and to deport him. In the light of Mr. Cowell's United Kingdom citizenship and of the diagnosis of his mental condition, Her Majesty's Government are ready to accept him. Appropriate arrangements will be made for his treatment in this country.
§ Mr. LoveysI thank the hon. Gentleman for that comprehensive and fairly hopeful reply. I realise the difficulties involved, but in view of the serious mental illness of this person, which is causing very great distress to his parents, will the hon. Gentleman do everything 7 possible to expedite his return to this country and his entry to Broadmoor and to give a definite date as soon as possible?
§ Mr. PadleyI cannot today promise that he will return to this country before Christmas, but the hon. Gentleman can rest assured that the steps he wishes will be carried out as quickly as possible.
