HC Deb 22 April 1964 vol 693 c1281
10. Sir C. Thornton-Kemsley

asked the Secretary of State for Defence whether he will arrange for the issue of combat suits on a scale sufficient for the use of combat troops of the Territorial Army.

Mr. Kirk

As I stated in the Army Estimates debate on 9th March, we are studying the question of the issue of combat dress to the Territorial Army. I am not yet able to make a statement.

Sir C. Thornton-Kemsley

Would not my hon. Friend agree that the cost of this step would be offset to a large extent by the saving in the wear and tear of service dress, which is particularly heavy in, the case of Highland regiments wearing the kilt?

Mr. Kirk

The cost is about ill million. Battle dress is, of course, the normal dress used by the T.A. for training and operations. I doubt if we would save all that much.
