HC Deb 26 March 1963 vol 674 cc1100-1
13. Mr. Temple

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government and Minister for Welsh Affairs why the inquiry into the West Cheshire green belt was postponed last October; and whether he is now in a position to announce the date when this inquiry will be held.

Sir K. Joseph

The inquiry was postponed because comprehensive studies are being made of land needs and resources around Merseyside. I cannot yet say when these studies will be completed nor, therefore, when it will be practicable to hold an inquiry.

Mr. Temple

Is my right hon. Friend aware that the citizens of this locality will regard that as a most unsatisfactory reply? May I express the hope that he will consider this in the light of the very heavy demand for housing that exists there?

Sir K. Joseph

I will certainly hasten the inquiry as fast as is practicable. But it must make sense to know the facts and the likely demand for land in the region before finally considering the boundaries of the green belt.
