HC Deb 26 March 1963 vol 674 c1116
40. Sir J. Lucas

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer by what percentage he estimates the cost of living would rise if, in adopting the decimal system, there were 10 pennies to the shilling.

The Financial Secretary to the Treasury (Mr. Anthony Barber)

This is one of the matters on which Lord Halsbury's Committee is expected to advise my right hon. Friend.

Sir J. Lucas

Will the Minister bear in mind the fact that at present we can send 80 letters for £1, whereas if this proposal goes through we shall be able to send only 60 for the same price?

Mr. Barber

I am sure that Lord Halsbury will bear that point in mind.
