HC Deb 29 January 1963 vol 670 cc739-40
22. Mr. G. Thomas

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government and Minister for Welsh Affairs whether he is aware that a county court judge has expressed his inability to prevent the evictions of families in the Cardiff area until legislation is changed; and what action he will take to lessen the number of evictions.

Sir K. Joseph

I am unable to identify the statement referred to by the hon. Member. If he will let me have more details, I will write to him.

Mr. Thomas

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that this statement was not published in the Press and that the people who are faced with eviction, because the landlord wishes to sell the property and for that reason alone, were told by the judge in the court that he could do nothing to protect them because of the Rent Act? Will the right hon. Gentleman say what protection can be given and what help can be given to judges in this matter?

Sir K. Joseph

There are several possible protections in these circumstances, and I should be grateful if the hon. Member would send me details so that I can study them.
