HC Deb 04 February 1963 vol 671 cc31-2
36. Mr. Donnelly

asked the Minister of Labour whether he will circulate in the OFFICIAL REPORT a list of the employment exchanges in Wales where the percentage of unemployment exceeds 6 per cent. of the insured population.

Mr. Hare

Yes, Sir. I will arrange for the information to be circulated in the OFFICIAL REPORT.

Mr. Donnelly

Is the Minister aware that some of these employment exchanges have been scheduled under the Local Employment Act and that some have not? In these circumstances, is it the Government's view that it does not matter whether they are scheduled under the Act?

Mr. Hare

No. That is the last thing which any hon. Member from Wales should say. Most people should realise that what has happened under the Local Employment Act and what the Board of Trade did beforehand has constituted a major revolution in Wales. The diversification of industry which has gone there has been remarkable in extent and is something which would not have been thought possible ten years ago.

Mr. Webster

Can my right hon. Friend indicate how many jobs have been created in Wales, in South Wales in particular, in the last five years?

Mr. Hare

If my hon. Friend would be good enough to put down a Question, I will certainly give him the figures.

Following is the information:

AREAS IN WALES WHERE THE RATE OF UNEMPLOYMENT AT 14TH JANUARY, 1963, WAS IN EXCESS OF 6 PER CENT.
