HC Deb 04 February 1963 vol 671 cc25-7
28. Mr. Morris

asked the Minister of Labour what was the number of boys and girls unemployed in the Port Talbot and Glyncorrwg area in the week ended 2nd February.

Mr. Whitelaw

103 boys and 149 girls were registered as unemployed on 31st January.

Mr. Morris

Does the Parliamentary Secretary realise that the inability of a young person to find employment at the beginning of his working life is a grave personal tragedy which is deeply felt? Is he aware that, since my constituency is an area of heavy industry, there is a lack of balance and of provision of suitable employment for young boys and girls? Will he consult the President of the Board of Trade about what effective measures might be taken? Since the number of school leavers will rise to 1,000 a year in this area in the next few years, can the Government say, as they said in 1961, that there are reasonable prospects for young people in this area.

Mr. Whitelaw

I note what the hon. Gentleman says. I share his concern about this matter, and therefore I am sure that he will share my limited satisfaction to learn that of 379 summer school leavers only 13 have still not found a job.
