HC Deb 08 April 1963 vol 675 cc900-1
18. Mr. A. Roberts

asked the Minister of Labour what steps he is taking to provide female and juvenile employment in Rothwell, Yorkshire.

Mr. Whitelaw

Unemployment in this area is not high, but our local officers and the Youth Employment Service will continue to make every effort to find suitable jobs for those unemployed.

Mr. Roberts

Does the hon. Gentleman believe in the rational dispersal of population? Will he bear in mind the huge conurbations in Lancashire, the Midlands and the south-east of England when considering the setting up of new industries, and will he bear in mind that automation is coming about in the mining industry and that the next few years will certainly see a good deal of unemployment?

Mr. Whitelaw

Yes, I note all those points. It is fair to say, in regard to Rothwell, that there are considerable employment opportunities in the Leeds and Wakefield areas, which are not far away.

Mr. Roberts

Will the hon. Gentleman take steps to give every opportunity to expanding industries in the West Riding?

Mr. Whitelaw

That must be a question for my right hon. Friend the President of the Board of Trade.
