HC Deb 08 April 1963 vol 675 cc899-900
17. Mr. A. Roberts

asked the Minister of Labour what consideration he has given to the provision of juvenile and female employment in Normanton, Yorkshire.

Mr. Whitelaw

The numbers wholly unemployed are relatively low but our local officers and the Youth Employment Service will continue to do all they can to find suitable jobs for those unemployed.

Mr. Roberts

What steps is the Minister taking to create unemployment in the West Riding? If he is not taking steps to create unemployment, will he ask his right hon. Friend the President of the Board of Trade why he is taking steps to cause unemployment in the West Riding of Yorkshire?

Mr. Whitelaw

I am certainly not endeavouring to cause unemployment in the West Riding of Yorkshire. Exactly the opposite is the case. Notice of the obvious truth of this can be seen from the unemployment figures for juveniles in Normanton. On 11th March, there were 28 unemployed, which included 22 girls who were working short time. These 22 girls resumed full time working today.
