HC Deb 16 May 1962 vol 659 c1320
8. Mr. Warbey

asked the Minister of Defence what discussions have taken place in the defence committee of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation regarding the need for West German military forces to be increased beyond the limits laid down in the protocols to the Brussels Treaty.

Mr. Watkinson

There have been no such discussions. So far as I know no official proposal of the kind has been made.

Mr. Warbey

Can the right hon. Gentleman confirm that the limit on the size of the German armed forces laid down in the Brussels Treaty—the figure has never been officially published—is, in fact, twelve divisions? Can he give a further assurance that no member of N.A.T.O. has proposed that it shall be increased beyond those twelve divisions?

Mr. Watkinson

I answered the second part of that supplementary in my original Answer, but I would like notice of the question if the hon. Gentleman wants me to disclose protocols to the Brussels Treaty.
