HC Deb 03 May 1962 vol 658 c1173
1. Lieut.-Commander Maydon

asked the Minister of Education what is the estimated total cost of frost damage to schools in the areas of English and Welsh local education authorities during the months of January and February, 1962.

The Minister of Education (Sir David Eccles)

Repairs carried out by local education authorities do not require my approval and this information is not available centrally.

Lieut.-Commander Maydon

Could my right hon. Friend give me any estimate of how much this repair work cost in the County of Somerset, and could he say what measures are taken to prevent this recurring and somewhat unnecessary expenditure?

Sir D. Eccles

In the County of Somerset thirteen schools found that their heating installations had been damaged and the cost to repair them was, I think, £2,000. As to the second part of my hon. and gallant Friend's supplementary question, it is part of the standards for school premises Regulations that school buildings should be made proof against frost damage.
