HC Deb 27 June 1962 vol 661 cc1142-3
28. Sir L Langford-Holt

asked the Minister of Transport what has been the cost of placing the No Waiting signs recently on the A.45 road at the northern end of M.45.

Mr. Marples

£372.

Sir J. Langford-Holt

Is my right hon. Friend aware that I am giving him a golden opportunity to save money, as these signs—72 of them—have been erected along a section of road which is already designated as a clearway? Can he tell me what the difference is between a "No Waiting" restriction and a clearway, which, as far as my understanding goes, means no waiting anyway?

Mr. Marples

I am grateful to my hon. Friend for the opportunity he has given me. A clearway order does not preclude parking on the verges of the road. The verges of this road have been spoiled by vehicles parking there, and the police say that they not only do that but are also a danger to traffic. On safety grounds, the cost of these signs is the ref ore justified.

Sir J. Langford-Holt

Will my right hon. Friend say why it is that he does not extend these signs for another 10 or 12 miles of road, where the same situation arises?

Mr. Marples

I do not think that this is the case, because there are two cafés on this stretch, Bob's Café and Auto's Café, and I can assure my hon. Friend that that does not apply to the remaining 10 miles of the section.
