HC Deb 26 July 1962 vol 663 cc1719-20
24. Mr. Gourlay

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he is aware of the recent redundancy in Burntisland shipyard; and when the buildings at Donibristle will be available for alternative industry.

Mr. Erroll

I am aware of some reduction in the numbers employed in the Burntisland shipyards in the course of this year, but there has fortunately been no corresponding increase in unemployment. If all goes well the advance factory at Donibristle should be ready for occupation by the middle of next year.

Mr. Gourlay

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the local population is very largely dependent on the Burntisland shipyard? In view of the present state of the shipbuilding industry, will he give an undertaking that the greatest possible inducements will be given to industry to occupy the factory at Donibristle when it is ready?

Mr. Enroll

We shall certainly do our best to secure early occupation of the factory at Donibristle. It is encouraging to find that unemployment in the Burntisland shipyard area has not increased.
