HC Deb 25 January 1962 vol 652 cc398-9
27. Mr. Jeger

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he has received from the Joint Council the scheme for the building of the National Theatre; and whether he will make a statement.

Mr. Brooke

I have received from the Chairman of the Joint Council a report on the present stage reached in the Council's discussions. A full scheme has not yet been submitted and I am not in a position to make any further statement.

Mr. Jeger

Does not the right hon. Gentleman appreciate that, although the Government have been reluctantly forced to accept this scheme, he will perform no useful service to the country by unduly delaying it?

Mr. Brooke

It is not possible for me or any other member of the Government to make a further statement until a scheme has been submitted to us.
