HC Deb 29 November 1961 vol 650 cc408-9
6. Mr. Millan

asked the Lord Privy Seal whether there have been recent changes in the number and length of overseas news broadcasts to Spain.

The Joint Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (Mr. Peter Thomas)

There have been no recent changes in the number and length of overseas broadcasts in the British Broadcasting Corporation's Spanish service.

Mr. Millan

I am grateful to hear that. Will the right hon. Gentleman give an assurance that the Government will not follow the lead of other Western Governments in cutting down the number of broadcasts to Spain, since it is so important that the people there should have free and uncensored information, particularly when the Communist countries are stepping up the number of their broadcasts?

Mr. Thomas

It is not our present intention to cut down on these broadcasts.
