HC Deb 07 March 1961 vol 636 c243
28. Mr. Owen

asked the President of the Board of Trade how many projects under the Local Employment Act have received consideration by the County of Northumberland; how many have been approved; and whether he will make a statement.

Mr. N. Macpherson

Seven projects, of which two have so far been approved.

Mr. Owen

Does the Minister realise that seven projects in the County of Northumberland do not touch the problem in any way? It is a county where the major industry is contracting and where there is a considerable drift from the land. Is it not necessary and urgent now that more definite action should be taken by the Government?

Mr. Macpherson

I am aware that industry has not been going to that area to the extent we should like, but we are nevertheless doing our best to encourage it to do so.
